Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ekiti State Command have confirmed the arrest of one Ayodeji Fakuade, a student of the Federal University in Ekiti State, in connection with an online fraud in the state.
According to the State Commandant of the Corps, Mr John Fayemi, the suspect, a 300 level student of Computer Engineering of the institution was tracked down and arrested by the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of the command in Ado-Ekiti.
He said the undergraduate student had defrauded several people in Akure, Ondo State and Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital respectively by sending fake alerts to traders in exchange for goods and services.
His words,”The suspect, until he was recently arrested in Ado-Ekiti, had on the fateful day, purchased one iphone XR at a phone shop near Osekita in Ado-Ekiti with a fake alert of N160,000, to the shop owner through a non existing account.
“The suspect left the shop with the assurance that he had paid for the phone he purchased. The shop owner who did not see the alert for days contacted the suspect through phone calls which he did not respond to.
“He later blocked the seller’s number and cut the shop owner off from reaching him on phone.
“The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of the Command who went ahead and tracked the suspect, later arrested him in Akure, the Ondo State capital and brought him back to Ado-Ekiti.”
Similarly, the Corps has also confirmed the arrest of five persons over various offences, ranging from drug related offences, burglary, conspiracy and other illicit businesses.
He said the suspects are currently undergoing interrogations at the office of the Corps along Afao road, Ado-Ekiti.
Fayemi said the suspects; Micheal Samuel, 39; Bamidele Atowoju, 25; Pelumi Ojo, 23; Temitope Oke, 32 and Makinde Oluwaropo, 26; were arrested at separate locations in Ado Ekiti and Ondo State.
Items recovered from them, according to the NSCDC helmsman include; large quantities of substances believed to be India hemp, Colorado, shisha and other dangerous substances concealed in nylon.
The Ekiti NSCDC Commandant, called on parents to take full responsibility and care of their children and always be vigilant within their environments against any strange faces.
According to him, “Youths are the future of Nigeria and we need to correct some of them who are engaging in illicit act that can jeopardize their future, thereby constituting nuisance to the society,” he stated.
