Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of three persons who specialise in attacking farmers on their farm lands and stealing their produce.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Sunday Abutu, a DSP, the suspects are Damilola Ogunlusi, Olorunsola Segun and Sekoni Tunde.
He said they were arrested in a farm settlement located along Iyin/Ado-Ekiti express road by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) upon complaints by some farmers in the area.
Abutu said during interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had attacked some farmers with machetes and carted away some tubers of yams.
“They have also confessed to have entered another farm settlement recently at Ipole-Ekiti, where an 85-year-old man, Awe Julius, was inflicted with serious cuts and ten tubers of yam carted away in the process.
“The octogenarian, Julius, later died while receiving treatment at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.
“The stolen yam tubbers were recovered, while effort is ongoing to arrest other members of the gang at large,”he stated.
The PPRO assured that all the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed on the matter.
