Ekiti Police nab fake lawyer

The police in Ekiti State have arrested a middle aged man, Kayode Abayomi over alleged forgery and impersonation as a lawyer.
The suspect, an indegene of Isẹ-Ekiti in Ise/Orun local government area of the state was apprehended by some lawyers within the premises of Ado-Ekiti High Court and handed over to the police for prosecution.
Abayomi, in his confessional statement before the police, claimed to be member of Ado-Ekiti branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).
He was said to have lied that he attended Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti and later proceeded to the Nigeria Law School, Lagos State in 2017, and was called to Bar in 2018, after which he said he had been practicing as a Legal Practitioner ever since.
At his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Abdulhameen Lawal, the suspect was charged with two counts of impersonation and forgery.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, the suspect was reasonably suspected to have committed the offence of impersonation as a lawyer and forgery of lawyer’s stamp and seal.
The offences contravene Sections 484 and 467 (4b) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The prosecutor applied for the remand warrant and an order to forward the duplicate case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Lawal granted an order to remand the suspect in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado-Ekiti for 14 days to allow police authority conclude their investigation.
She later adjourned the matter to January 26, 2022 for further hearing.
In their separate statements to the Police, Chairperson of the NBA, Ikere-Ekiti branch, Mrs Owolabi Kikelomo and the General Secretary Nigerian Bar Association, Ado-Ekiti branch, Mr. Tobi Ogunbiyi, dissociated their branches from ever knowing the accused person, as a member of their respective branches.
The duo urged the Police to carry out thorough investigation on the matter while the defendant should face full wrath of the law, if found culpable.
