From Victor Akinkuolie, Ado-Ekiti
The Ekiti State Police Command, in its efforts to ensure a crime-free environment, paraded 107 suspects in 2024, neutralised two others during shootouts, and recovered a N7 million ransom from kidnappers.
Speaking during the end-of-year briefing held at the police command headquarters along Ado/Iyin Road, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, now Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Mr. Adewale Adeniran, highlighted the command’s achievements.
Adeniran disclosed that among the suspects arrested, 63 were involved in kidnapping, 32 were armed robbers targeting Point of Sale (POS) operators, while the remaining 12 were burglars, murderers, car thieves, and rapists.
He also revealed that 14 firearms, including locally made and English rifles, along with various ammunition, were recovered during the year.
The police boss recounted two major breakthroughs in 2024. One involved the neutralisation of a notorious kidnapper who had abducted school children and teachers along Emure/Eporo-Ekiti in Emure Local Government Area.
The other case involved a suspect responsible for the killing of two traditional rulers along Ìrele/Oke-Ako in Ajoni LCDA.
Adeniran commended the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for their resilience and swift action during distress calls, which contributed to the successes recorded.
Reflecting on his tenure, the newly promoted AIG attributed the achievements to the cooperation of residents and the media.
He noted that such collaboration ensured relative peace during the festive season and throughout the year.
Adeniran urged Ekiti residents to extend similar support to his successor to sustain security efforts.
He further revealed that many of the suspects apprehended are undergoing trial, with several already serving sentences at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Ekiti State Traditional Council, Oba Ilori Faboro, praised the outgoing police chief for his dedication and urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to appoint a competent replacement to maintain the momentum.
The event also featured awards for officers who displayed exceptional performance during the year, underscoring the command’s commitment to professionalism.
