Ekiti Poly workers protest over collapsed bridge

Academic and commercial activities on Thursday suffered a set back at Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, following a protest embarked upon by the staff and students of the institution.

The protester comprises, members Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSAP)  and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP) among others.

The protesters were demonstrating over the collapsed Ureje Bridge, which connected Ado-Ekiti to the institution. 

During the protest, the people described the collapsed bridge as a death trap and serious hinderance to free flow of vehicles to the polytechnic.

They called on the National Assembly to pass a resolution compelling the Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola to begin work on the road, having been approved for reconstruction.

They expressed their displeasure over what they called actitivities of the federal government for delaying action on the reconstruction of the bridge that collapsed last year due to torential rainfall and persistent flooding at the portion.

The protesting staff who were later joined by commercial drivers, motorcyclists as well as several residents of the area, carried placards with different inscriptions which includes,  ‘This Bridge has Become a Death Trap”, FG please help us “, “We Need Urgent Help, FG Come to our Aid”, among others.

The protest later resulted into long traffic jam  along the busy road with many civil servants forced to return home.
