Ekiti to build mega schools in 16 LGAs

The Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has revealed plans to establish mega schools in each of the 16 local government areas of the state.

Chairman of Ekiti SUBEB, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, disclosed this on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, explaining that the schools would be furnished with modern ICT tools, audio-visual facilities, and specialised laboratories to enhance the learning experience.

Akinwumi stated, “The mega schools will be furnished with state-of-the-art Information Communication Technology equipment and ultra-modern audio-visual facilities to make the products of the schools globally competitive.”

Each proposed mega school will feature 12 classrooms and have a capacity to accommodate at least 400 pupils.

Akinwumi added, “They will be equipped with science, computer and Home Economics laboratories, library and modern toilet facilities with water and sanitation facilities which will all be secured with perimeter fence.”

He also noted that the enrolment figures would play a key role in determining the locations for the mega schools.

The SUBEB Chairman revealed that Governor Biodun Oyebanji had approved the payment of over N3.5 billion as counterpart funds for the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention funds.

This move is part of ongoing efforts to improve the teaching and learning environment in schools and to bolster the capacity of teachers in the state’s basic education sector.

Akinwumi explained that the initiative was designed to ensure a substantial government intervention in public schools, an effort that has been ongoing since 2018 without interruption.

He further added that the state government would allocate funds for the continuous maintenance of school infrastructure and ensure the digitisation of the basic education sector.

As part of this process, Akinwumi stated that the state government, in partnership with development partners, was digitising school materials at no cost to Ekiti State as part of a trial run.

Additionally, SUBEB has secured approval to train 4,000 teachers in modern teaching methodologies during the ongoing academic year, a significant increase from the 2,700 teachers trained last session.

Following the establishment of the Graduate Teachers’ cadre in Ekiti’s public primary schools by the Oyebanji administration, 505 teachers with university degrees, recruited during the 2023 session, have been upgraded to Grade Level 08 from Grade Level 07.
