Electrician electrocuted while fixing high-tension cable in Oyo

A tragic incident occurred in Eruwa, headquarters of Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State, as a yet-to-be-identified electrician was electrocuted while attempting to fix a fault on a high-tension line.

The victim, according to reports, was working on a 33KV electricity distribution cable belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) at the Odi Babaode area of the town when the incident happened.

Confirming the incident on Friday, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Canon Yemi Akinyinka, said the man got electrocuted while working on an active power line without first shutting down the feeder.

Akinyinka explained that the Fire Service received a distress call from one Adelanre Adeyinka at exactly 3:29pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

He said, “The incident occurred when the victim (electrician) was trying to rectify an electrical fault on the active power lines without shutting down the feeder. He was electrocuted while trying to fix an electrical fault on the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company’s 33KV high-tension cables in the area.”

He noted that a rescue team led by Peluola Babatunde was immediately dispatched to the scene of the incident.

“Unfortunately, by the time our team got to the location, the victim had already been electrocuted. His remains have since been recovered and handed over to officers from the Eruwa Police Station,” he said.

While lamenting the tragic loss, Akinyinka emphasised the dangers of tampering with high-voltage electrical installations without appropriate training and safety protocols.

“Life has no duplicate. It is only trained engineers and certified technicians who should shoulder the responsibility of handling active electrical equipment,” he warned.
