‘Embrace clean environment for healthy living’

Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Tayo Adeniyi has called on the people of the state to embrace clean environment in order to guarantee healthy living.

He made the call while speaking with The Hope after the June edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Akure last Saturday.

According to him, clean environment prevent the spread of diseases in the society, noting that indiscriminate dumping of refuse is harmful to the people of the state.

Speaking further on the exercise which focused on sensitising communities through the landlords association on the importance of healthy environment, he commended the level of compliance of the people of the state capital especially in Oba-Ile, Akure North and Ijapo Estate, Akure and advised that they do more by bringing an improvement on the environment.

General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority, Mrs Bola Akinyanmi while addressing the landlords association of Ejioba residential estate, Oba-Ile, she stated that it is mandatory for house owners to participate in waste collection, noting that violators will face the wrath of the law.

Represented by the Director, Finance and Administration of the authority, Mr Dele Akinmoye, she stressed the need to clear vacant plots of land in their environment and report owners of abandoned plots of land to the necessary authority.

Also speaking, Director, Public Enlightenment, Enforcement and Mobilisation, Rev(Mrs) Ayo Adeyemo while stressing the need to participate in waste collection, noted that everybody generates waste on daily basis adding that they must engage the services of waste collectors to evacuate and dispose properly.

While frowning at the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially in the water ways and drainages, she stated that indiscriminate dumping of waste has environmental consequences.

However, she called on all to embrace sanitation exercise saying “our environment is our next of kin. When you key into sanitation, you receive good health in return.”

Speaking earlier, Vice Chairman of the estate, Engr. Dipo Aluko noted that the waste collector in charge of the area was introduced to them few months ago and has since been up and doing in their operation.

He specifically commended the collector’s effort at ensuring that residents maintain clean environment.
