A widow and a mother of three, Mrs Apuwabi Olorunfemi has approached the Ondo State Judicial Panel of Enquiry on Police Brutality and Other Matters for compensation over the murder of her husband, Inspector Apuwabi Olorunfemi during EndSARS protest last year.
The application is a fresh petition received by the Justice Adesola Sidiq (Rtd) led fact finding panel, sitting in Akure.
The case was adjourned till January 27 for hearing.
Counsel to the petitioner, Yusuf Adebayo, while speaking with The Hope after the sitting yesterday, disclosed that Inspector Apuwabi was killed in Ondo town by hoodlums during the EndSARS protest in October 23, 2020, adding that his car was also burnt to ashes
“Being a policeman, he was working at Igbokoda police division. He was coming from Igbokoda to see the wife at Owo. The mob attacked him at Ondo, killed him and burnt his car on October23, last year.
“The man was coming from Igbokoda to see his new baby born on October 18, 2020 but he was not opportuned to see the baby before he was killed”, he narrated.
Petitions filed before the panel by Evans Okata, Akinmejiwa Olusola and Inspector Oladele Alago on looting and vandalisation of their respective property during the EndSARS protest were heard and closed for the panel to make recommendations to the state government.
The application of Pastor Theophilus Ilemobayo for compensation over his vandalised property was adjourned till February 4 at the request of the counsel for regularisation of the application.
Petitions filed against operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Special Anti-Kidnaping Squad by Mrs Adeusi Solape, Mrs Jimoh Bosede and Mrs Bodunwa Williams were adjourned till February 2017.
Meanwhile, on cases heard on Wednesday the panel would visit the vandalised Okitipupa Local Government Secretariat on January 26 to see the damages done to the Secretariat during the EndSARS protest last October.
Speaking with The Hope after the session, the counsel to the local government, Bode Famakin, said that not less than 500 million naira would be required to re-acquire, renovate and rebuild the vandalised Secretariat.
In another case, the panel visited a property, located along Oba Adesida Road, Akure, which was destroyed during the same protest last year.
Shortly after the visit, the petitioner, Pastor Johnson Tanimola, a professional estate agent in charge of the commercial two-storey building was cross examined and the case was closed.
The counsel to the petitioner, James Alade commended the manner and pace at which the panel handled the case, saying if conventional courts were run that way, people would have confidence to approach the judiciary whenever issues arise.
The petitions filed by Arowasafe Gbenga and Mrs Kemi Abiodun against the operatives of the defunct SARS were adjourned till February 10, 2021.
Petition by Chief Patrick Akinrotoye against officers of IRT attached to the Inspector General of Police was not heard as the petitioner and his counsel were unavailable
Similarly, hearing on the petition filed by Prof Dayo Faduyile Campaign Organisation was adjourned till January 28 as the petitioner was unavailable at the sitting.
