Assess to education through technology will be a mirage in Nigeria without a solution to erratic power supply, it has been observed.
Making the observation while speaking in an interview with The Hope, Chairman of Academic Staff Union Secondary Schools in Ondo state, Comrade Tajudeen Balogun stated that technology is key to the success of education.
According to him, technology makes things easier including education but without regular power supply, the use of technology is not possible.
“The 6334 system was for those who are not good in academics to cross to technical aspect after Junior Secondary School three but that system failed because of lack of electricity to power the equipment.
“Another problem is lack of manpower to teach the students. Most of our technical colleges that ought to produce these people who are vast in that area have been moribund. Our government does not attach importance to germane issue like that.
Balogun who said that most of the technical equipment in secondary schools were stolen because they were not put in use stressed that erratic power supply was the cause.
He said majority of students are not benefitting from online learning in some areas because they do not have assess to power and data.
He advised government to find a lasting solution to power supply be it through the hydro means or solar so that everybody can have light.
He commended some people donating computers to schools but said power supply will not allow them to enjoy the equipment.
“The best technology is ICT. With ICT in place, online teaching becomes easy. You have some other demonstration that could also be carried out in schools. But without everybody having assess to power, boosting education through technology is not possible”, he stressed.
