Ex-Ekiti deputy speaker escapes death by whiskers

A former deputy speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olusegun Adewumi, has escaped death when suspected assailants reportedly besieged his country home at Erinjiyan Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the assailants, who invaded the place at about 2:am on the fateful day forced their way into the compound while armed with dangerous weapons and started shooting gun.

An eyewitness in the compound said they didn’t cart away any property, but were particular about the whereabouts of the former lawmaker.

The eyewitness who claimed to be in charge of the house located at Ogunna quarters in the community,  explained that the hoodlums numbered about 10 turned over the whole compound in search of the former lawmaker.

Another resident of the town said “I was in Aramoko Ekiti, a nearby community, when I received  a call from someone living close to the house that I should come at dawn to Erinjiyan. The source added that there were sporadic shootings in the residence of the former lawmaker.

“Not quite long, I received call from two other people, who were very close to me. I immediately  rushed down to Erinjiyan at dawn, when I got to the place, I could see traces of their forced entry, but no property was carted away.

Reacting to the incident, the former lawmaker said he was in Ado-Ekiti for a special engagement when the incident occurred, he attributed the incident to the work of those he described as enemies of his political career.

He recalled that he brutally lost his aged mother, Mrs. Juliana Adewumi who was murdered in cold blood alongside one of his political aides, Mr. Ayo Jeje in the community in 2013.

The former deputy speaker added that it was the shock of the unfortunate incident that led to the death of his father, Pa Gabriel Ojo Adewumi,

While calling on the police to begin investigation on the matter,he also called on other security agencies to do more on security surveillance in the area and arrest the hoodlums.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer,(PPRO), Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu confirmed the receipt of the matter, but said he has not been properly briefed by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the community.

 He promised to get back to our corespondent as soon as he is properly briefed on the matter.
