Expert calls for global action to combat microbial threats

By Akinnodi Francis, Ondo

Professor Abdulazeez Abubakar, a renowned expert in Public Health Microbiology and Parasitology at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has called for urgent global efforts to tackle microbial threats.

Speaking at the Laje Campus in Ondo City during an interview with The Hope, he emphasised the need for a supportive environment to foster impactful research, urging governments and researchers to collaborate actively toward this goal.

Prof. Abubakar underscored the importance of multidisciplinary partnerships at both local and international levels to address the challenges posed by microbial threats.

He highlighted the critical need for governments to enhance their preparedness for future epidemics and pandemics, drawing lessons from the devastating impacts of COVID-19, Ebola, and Lassa fever.

“Microbes are everywhere—in the air, water, and land. They are present in our food, drinks, meats, and even on surfaces like toilet door handles, washbasins, and toothbrushes,” he explained.

Prof. Abubakar elaborated on the dangers posed by harmful microbes, discussing their defense mechanisms, including beta-lactamase enzymes, serotoxin production, and the presence of H antigens.

He also proposed strategies to mitigate their impact on human hosts, stressing the role of hygiene and environmental sanitation in controlling their spread.

Reflecting on his extensive research, the professor shared groundbreaking findings in the fight against microbial resistance and captivity.

He warned that without rigorous adherence to hygiene and sanitation practices, humanity remains at significant risk from microbial threats.

“We cannot afford to be caught unprepared again,” he cautioned.

Reiterating the importance of a conducive research environment, Prof. Abubakar called on governments and research institutions to foster collaboration across disciplines and borders to free humanity from the grip of microbial dangers.
