Experts advocate pre-marital testing to prevent marital crises

By Sade Adewale

Medical experts have urged intending couples to undergo comprehensive pre-marital testing to prevent health challenges that could lead to crises in their marriages.

Speaking in Akure, Dr Adeola Adewumi emphasised the importance of genotype testing before marriage, noting that it can help prevent complications associated with sickle cell disease.

She highlighted global statistics showing that Nigeria accounts for 75 percent of sickle cell cases worldwide, largely due to ignorance.

“The implications of ignoring pre-marital tests are significant,” Adewumi said. “If couples know their genotype and other health statuses beforehand, they can make informed decisions about whether to proceed with the union.”

Adewumi further recommended tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other conditions to minimise health risks.

She observed that increased awareness and pre-marital counselling have encouraged more couples to embrace testing, which ultimately safeguards their marriages.

She also stressed the importance of disclosing any diseases that could affect marital life before formalising the union, urging couples to prioritise testing well in advance of their wedding day.

Dr Idris Amos, another expert, underscored the need to balance wedding preparations with attention to fertility and sexual health.

He remarked that while couples focus on wedding dresses, venues, and guest lists, they must also prioritise their health to ensure a fulfilling married life.

Amos pointed out the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV, hepatitis B and C, and hereditary conditions in the country.

He advised couples to not only undergo blood tests to confirm physical health but also consider psychological evaluations to determine their readiness for the trials and tribulations of marriage.

“It is essential for intending couples to take these precautions to avoid stressful conceptions or dissatisfaction in their future sexual lives,” Amos added.
