Health experts have highlighted layered clothes, hydration and clean and dust-free environment as some of the ways to care for children’s health during harmattan.
The experts in separate interviews with The Hope warned that exposing children to cold can badly affect their immune system and make them more susceptible to illnesses.
Speaking with The Hope, Dr Adebayo Emmanuel emphasized that hydration in maintaining a healthy respiratory system during dry, cold weather is very crucial.
He advised parents to dress their children in warm, layered clothes and maintain a clean, allergen-free home.
Adebayo stressed the importance of ample rest for children during the harmattan season, suggesting that parents should consult their paediatrician for personalized health advice.
A senior matron, Mrs Elizabeth Adeniran emphasized bathing with warm water and dressing in thick clothes like cardigans and socks to protect children from direct cold, suggesting applying balm on their chests and feet at night for warmth.
A pharmacist, Mr Oyelami Oluwatosin stressed the importance of staying hydrated to combat dehydration and warned against exposing children to cold drinks during the dry weather.
He highlighted potential issues during harmattan to include chapped skin, dry eyes, and respiratory problems among others.
Another health expert, Nurse Imole Adeniyi similarly recommended protective measures, such as dressing children in thick clothes and using nose covers to shield them from dust.
She underscored the significance of adequate rest and water intake during this season.
Nurse Odunayo Rejoyce suggested using emollient creams on children’s chests to prevent colds, emphasizing the need for overall care during the harmattan season due to increased disease transmission.
