The Deputy General Manager (Aviation Security) and Airport Chief of Security (ACoS) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Akure Chapter, Mr Benneth Iwuchukwu, fsi, has called for greater cooperation from residents of surrounding communities to address issues of land encroachment and stray cattle at the Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu Airport, Oba-Ile, Akure.
The ACoS noted that stray animals occasionally find their way onto the runway, posing potential risks to aircraft during landing and take-off operations.
He, however, commended the collaboration between FAAN and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Agro-Rangers Unit, which has helped to reduce such occurrences significantly.
He also expressed concern over the increasing cases of land encroachment, explaining that the land on which the airport stands was duly acquired by the Federal Government under the Land Use Act, with compensation paid for economic trees and other assets.
Despite this, he said, some individuals still make false claims to portions of the property and sometimes present counterfeit survey documents, resulting in avoidable disputes.
Mr Iwuchukwu appealed to residents to respect the airport’s boundaries and refrain from vandalising perimeter fences or gaining unauthorised access to restricted areas.
According to him, such activities not only threaten airport security but also put human lives and flight operations at risk.
He added that FAAN had already constructed alternative access routes for nearby communities to ease movement and prevent disruption of airport operations.
While stressing that management would always prefer peaceful engagement, the security chief maintained that FAAN would not compromise on safety and security standards.
Mr Iwuchukwu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment and assured that FAAN would continue to work closely with the Ondo State Government and relevant security agencies to sustain smooth operations at the airport.
