Farmer, artisan arraigned for fraud

A 29-year-old farmer, Dwarty Kazon, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate Court for fraud and impersonation.

The defendant is facing a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, fraud and stealing.

Police prosecutor, Abdulateef Suleiman  informed the court that the defendant committed the offence between November 2023 and January 2024, in the Akure>.

Abdulateef said the defendant impersonated as the owner of Whatsapp account of one Oyetunji Abioye, to defraud people.

He also alleged that the defendant on same date, time and place, used his Wema Bank Account Number 0284393289 to fraudulently obtain the total sum of N2,829,756 from different people through the Whatsapp account of the victim.

The offences contravene Sections 484, 419  and 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of the Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge while his counsel, A.P. Abodukun, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he would be available to attend all court proceedings.

 Chief Magistrate O.J. Kpemi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 25, 2024, for  hearing.

Also, a 30-year-old artisan, Alade Joseph, from Oke-Aro, Akure, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate Court for fraud.

According to te prosecutor, Inspector Folashade Adeyemi, the defendant committed the offence on different dates in Akure.

Adeyemi informed the court that the defendant, Joseph, conspired with one Foladun Taiwo, and fraudulently obtained the sum of N90,000 from Golden Gola Resources owned by one George Okoro.

He was also alleged to have obtained the sum of N400,000 from one Omosebi Sumisola and N250,000 from one Kudirat Falowo, under the pretence of producing a bed frame and invest in aluminum fabrication.

According to the prosecution, the defendant committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419A(B) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offences leveled against him.

The prosecutor informed the court that all the six witnesses, including the Investigative Police Officer(IPO), handling the case were all present in court.

The defence counsel, Kehinde Osadugba,  applied for the bail of his client.

Chief Magistrate, Mr Adekunle Ogunmoyela, granted the defendant N1million bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 20, 2024.
