A 35-year-old farmer, Abiodun Edward, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrates’ Court for alleged illegal possession of a firearm and membership of an unlawful society.
Edward, whose residential address was not disclosed, is facing two charges: belonging to an unlawful society and possessing a firearm without lawful authority.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecuting counsel, P.O. Nwafor, told the court that the alleged offences occurred on March 22 at about 5:00 p.m. on Afusi Street in Owo.
The prosecutor alleged that Edward was apprehended by members of the Ondo State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, while in possession of a locally-made single-barrel cut-to-size gun and one live cartridge.
“When questioned about the gun and his intentions, he was unable to provide a credible explanation,” Nwafor added.
Further, the prosecutor claimed that Edward is a member of an unlawful society known as the Aiye confraternity and has been making threats to local residents.
The prosecutor contended that the offence contravenes Sections 411 and 64 of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.
In response, defence counsel T.P. Osoto urged the court to grant Edward bail on the most liberal terms.
Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned until May 26 for further hearing.
