Farmer in court over N230,000 fraud

A 50-year-old farmer, Adewale Okunola, has been dragged before the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo town, for fraudulently obtaining the sum of N230,000 from from one  Oluwayemisi Ogunsipe.

The police brought Okuola before the court on Monday, for  allegedly collecting the sum from the woman with a promise  of acquiring half plot of land for her, but reportedly converted the money to his own use.

Olagoke is now facing a one-count charge bothering on fraud and pretence.

The accused was said to have committed the offence on October 25, 2018, contrary to  section 383 (2) and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria,  2006.

The charge sheet read in part,”That you, Adewale Okunola , on October 25, 2018 at about 10am at Road 3 Extension Power Line, Ajagbale-Oka, Ondo in the Ondo Magisterial District did fraudulently collected the sum of N230,000 from one  Oluwayemisi Ogunsipe, with the intent to purchase half plot of land measuring 60ft by 60ft for her , but converted the money to your own and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 383(2) and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor, Mr Joseph Ajayi, who told the court that he would be calling three witnesses to testify in the case, applied for a date to enable him study the case file.

Lawyer for the accused, Barrister Abayomi Oladire, applied for the bail of the accused in most liberal terms.

The magistrate, Mr Damilola Sekoni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till February 21, 2019 for trial
