The Ondo State Chairman of Farmers Congress, Mr Abayomi Monilari has disclosed that the association is partnering with a Non Governmental Organisation, Global Hungai Mestration to provide inputs for rice farmers for this year’s planting season.
Monilari said this in a chat with The Hope in Akure yesterday.
He said all necessary inputs particularly the rice seedlings have been supplied to the farmers to assess for massive rice production in the state.
He noted that farmers do not want to experience the drought experienced last year which he observed is making them to monitor and looking at the weather before embarking on planting.
Farmers, he said, have made alternative to rainfall by sourcing for areas where they can have sustainable water to use for rice production.
He disclosed that they are targeting to plant a thousand hectares of rice plantation this year while considering farmers who has the ability and skill to deliver the hectares demanded for.
He noted that farmers have opted for irrigation system to combat any form of inadequacies like the drought experienced last year as irrigation equipment have been put in place.
“Inputs are ready but we are trying to wait for weather to be conducive. We have considered irrigation system, the type adopted by the Hausas call the lambo system.
He appealed to government at all levels particularly the Ondo state government to come to the aids of the Farmers Congress who is financially constraint for massive production.
He raised the need for the opening of more lands for farmers which he said will go a long way to regain the lost glory of Nigeria who was among the first five top rice producers in the world.
