An appeal has gone to the Ondo state Government to allow farmers go about their business unhindered during lockdown so that there will be sufficient food.

The Chairman Sunshine Rice Farmers Association, Prince George Oladapo made the appeal in an interview with The Hope.

Oladapo who frowned at a situation whereby farmers are not given free movement, stressed that they need unfettered access to their farms to prepare for the planting season adding that a lot of things would be hampered if the situation lingers.

According to him, “we are not being allowed to move freely and it is hindering a lot of things. We are law abiding citizens and we do not have reasons to have issues with security agencies.

“Farmers take their time and we do things according to the directive of the state government. But all we are demanding now is that we should be given free movement.

“Because if the restriction should linger beyond this stage, a lot of things will be hampered”.

He suggested that farmers should be given pass by security and regulatory agencies through their commodities’ association to avoid mix up so that they can go about their lawful businesses.

Noting that the time lag of 7am to 7pm is not enough, Oladapo stressed that their yield will be affected if they do not have enough time to work

“For us in the rice sector, we are doing our land preparation, preparatory to planting season. We are ploughing, harrowing and ridging same as other commodities’ association. But if we have limited number of times to do our work, it will reduce the tonnage during harvest.

“Imagine someone like me coming from my farm in Ago Asolo which is seven kilometers away from the main road, then coming from Uso to Akure, it takes time and I have to be home before 7pm. So we should be given enough time if there will be food sufficiency”, he stated.

He however lauded the Federal Government for allowing agricultural products, produce and inputs to move freely in the country.
