Fatherhood crucial to children’s character, future —Cleric

By Babatunde Ayedoju

The Vicar of St Paul’s Anglican Church, Iju-Odo, Venerable Lawson Ogunduboye, has described fatherhood as a significant responsibility that shapes the character and future of children.

Ogunduboye, who delivered a keynote address on “Authority of the Father” at the church’s Fathers’ Summit recently, stressed that the authority of a father is foundational to the health and well-being of the family.

He pointed out that the concept of fatherly authority is often misunderstood or diminished, noting that cultural shifts have challenged traditional leadership models, sometimes leaving fathers uncertain of their roles.

Drawing from the example of Jacob blessing his children in the Bible, the senior cleric explained that fatherly authority is not merely about discipline or control, but about imparting wisdom, direction, and blessings to children.

He stated that today’s fathers are called to exercise this authority with intentionality, grace, and love.

His words: “Fatherly authority, when exercised with grace and humility, creates an environment where children can thrive.

“Jacob’s example in Genesis 49 is a model of this balance. While he spoke harsh truths to some of his sons, such as Reuben and Simeon, he also spoke words of hope and blessing.”
