Fela Inspired White Women to dress African Way – Seun Kuti

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has revealed how his father, the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, influenced white women who visited their home, leading them to embrace African fashion and hairstyles.
During an Instagram Live session, Seun recounted how Fela frequently hosted white women alongside his Nigerian friends but never altered his identity to impress them. Instead, he said the women were the ones who adapted to his way of life.
“My father had white women in his house. When I was growing up, at least two white women were always living with us. He always had white ones alongside the black ones,” Seun said.
He noted that rather than conforming to Western norms, Fela remained true to his African heritage, which ultimately influenced the women.
“Instead of Fela wearing a suit and tie to impress them, the women started wearing shrine regalia and African hairstyles. Fela never changed for them; they changed because of him. He already knew who he was and had a deep love for Africa,” he added.
Seun attributed this to Fela’s unwavering sense of identity and commitment to African culture, which left a lasting impression on those around him
