FG alerts states to rising River Niger flood risk
The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued a grave warning to states and communities along the River Niger, urging them to prepare for potential flooding as water levels rise alarmingly.
This development, as of August 22, 2024, stems from reports by the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which highlight the impact of upstream activities in Niger and Mali.
In a statement released on Friday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, alerted the public, saying, “Floodwaters from these two countries are expected to steadily flow into Nigeria, particularly through Kebbi State.”
The agency also stressed that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba on the River Niger have been notified and are on high alert to manage any arising situation.
“As of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs,” Mohammed reassured.
NIHSA has urgently advised states and communities along the River Niger to remain vigilant, as the floodwaters are expected to peak towards the end of August and into September.
The agency has pledged to closely monitor the evolving flood situation and provide regular updates to the public.
