FG calls for global intelligence sharing on immigration crime

The Federal Government has called for global collaboration and intelligence-sharing to tackle organised immigration crime, stressing that no country can single-handedly address the menace.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the call yesterday at the Border Security Summit held at Lancaster House, London, where he advocated the deployment of innovative security technologies to safeguard borders.

The summit, which drew over 30 global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, provided a platform to discuss key issues surrounding border control and transnational immigration crimes.

Minister Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its immigration policies while collaborating with international partners to combat human trafficking, smuggling, and document fraud.

Speaking during the event, he emphasised the need for technology-driven solutions and enhanced regional cooperation to dismantle criminal networks exploiting immigration loopholes.

In an interview with BBC UK, the minister highlighted the importance of bilateral and multilateral agreements in enhancing security frameworks, facilitating intelligence-sharing, and deploying advanced border management systems.

The summit also deliberated on migration trends, counter-terrorism strategies, and the role of artificial intelligence in border security.

Tunji-Ojo further engaged in high-level discussions with other global leaders, reinforcing Nigeria’s stance on structured and secure immigration policies while fostering international partnerships for sustainable solutions.
