The Federal Government has donated a live birds market to Ondo state government, in order to facilitate consumption of chicken by the populace.
The market was presented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to the veterinary section of the Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Akure.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the state Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food security, Mr. Akeem Ogundeko said the purpose of the market is to ensure that the people consume hygienic chicken.
He said the facility would also serve as a place where poultry meat could be processed after due examination by veterinary doctors.
The market, located behind the state’s abattoir, along Igoba, Akure-Ado road, was presented to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Olayato Aribo.
Aribo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Tubosun Ogunmola appreciated the Federal Government for donating the market to the state, which he said would go a long way in ensuring healthy diet for the host community.
He charged residents to make use of the market judiciously and ensure keeping it clean at all times.
The State Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry, Dr Adebayo Ehinmowo, noted that all birds to be processed at the market would be examined and certified for consumption.
He urged people to patronise the market for quality poultry meats.
