FG to eliminate firewood cooking in 1 million homes

…to replace with ‘sustainable energy solutions ‘
The Federal Government has announced plans to shift one million households from firewood-based cooking to clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this during a citizens’ engagement news conference in Abuja, marking her first 100 days in office.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim highlighted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote gender-responsive climate action, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to integrating women’s voices and leadership into climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
She noted that Nigeria’s participation at COP29 in Azerbaijan provided a platform for engaging with the international community on gender-focused climate policies.
“In this regard, we are working to transition one million households from firewood-based cooking to clean and sustainable energy solutions,” she said.
The minister emphasised that the transition is one of several strategies aimed at implementing reforms to empower, protect, and uplift women, girls, and vulnerable populations.
She further revealed that the ministry aims to economically empower 10 million women by 2027, thereby ensuring their active participation in Nigeria’s economic transformation.
“This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of a $1 trillion economy, where women are key contributors to national productivity,” she added.
