Finding solutions to insecurity in Nigeria

Since numerous forms of insecurity continue to afflict this nation, serious efforts should be embarked upon to curb them, particularly armed robbery, kidnapping, Boko Haram invasion and political assassination as Nigeria continues to wriggle in pains due to the serious insecurities ravaging-her.

This situation ought not to exist in this country considering the abundant natural and human resources at her disposal, but leadership failure, ethnic disagreement and serious political rivalry contribute to this unfortunate trauma.

Why are dedicated, reliable selfless and incorrupt leaders from every state and the numerous ethnic groups unable to unite to work for the progress and development of Nigeria? The failure of political parties in government to unite and improve the welfare of the people has caused the military interventions many times, but unfortunately these have not brought about the expected improvement in the unity and development of the country.

There are various forms of insecurities ravaging this country among which are armed robbery, political assassinations, kidnapping and Boko haram invasion of settlements by which people are not only murdered, but numerous villages have been burnt down. The most current of these acts of insecurities is perpetrated by kidnappers who criss-cross the forests and kidnapped along the numerous main roads in the country. As soon as they commit their crimes along the roads, they disappear into the forest with their victims out of the reach of the security agents.

Those who resist the kidnapping attempts are heartlessly shot and the murderers disappear into the forest only to re-appear on other major road to continue their dastardly acts. Where their victims are captured alive, they get in touch with their families from whom heavy ransoms are demanded if they want them released.

There are claims that the perpetrators of these dastardly acts are the Fulani herdsmen, because these are the major users of the forests through which they rear their cows. While the Fulani herdsmen who interact with numerous farmers in the south carry rearing sticks with which they direct their cows, they have never been seen carrying guns, but the kidnappers who kidnapped people on the major roads utilize sophisticated weapons and are never with cows.

The Fulani kidnappers on the major roads are of Fulani stock too, but they are widespread throughout the West African countries. Should we not differentiate between the cattle-rearing Fulani and the gun carrying ones? The cattle-rearers who carry sticks to make their cattle follow their chosen paths should be differentiated from the gun wielding ones.

Kidnapping for ransoms has brought about serious insecurity on the major roads in the country, while the victims are made to follow them into the forests and they are made to spend days and nights until the huge ransoms are paid, while those who refuse to cooperate with them are killed along the roads. It is still unfortunate that these murderers still carry out their illegal activities without being detected by the security agents.

Some people make the claim that the colonialist have marked grazing areas before independence, this is far from the truth, for example in the South West, the Yoruba ethnic groups owe their lands in accordance to their tradition. Their tradition does not permit them to concede such lands to foreigners either for farming or cattle rearing. Whenever there are differences between the Fulani Herdsmen and the owners of the land, such are resolved without resorting to the use of gun.

The failure of the government to control groups that are involved in these acts of insecurity in this country have made the acts to continue to persist. If adequate security can be provided by the military and police forces, the acts of armed robbery, kidnapping and invasion by Boko haram  would have ended.

It is true that it is only the Federal Government could maintain a police force and  Nigerian Army provide the security needs of the nation, but  these forces are not adequate for the needs of the people. The Federal Government is setting out to recruit policeman for the thirty-six states and their local governments. By doing this, the insecurity ravaging the country will be reduced.

It is very important and necessary to eliminate the serious insecurity problems ravaging this country. Since we are fighting a war without frontiers, we are in fact fighting the kidnappers and Boko Haram elements in series of wars whose locations we cannot precisely mark. We must embark on a collective action to find solutions to these problems.

We just have to work hard to strengthen the state police and community police in addition to working hard to improve the economy through meaningful development projects and the provision of employment opportunities for all willing Nigerians and particularly the youths.
