Fire guts 12 shops in Ibadan market, millions lost

No fewer than 12 shops were engulfed by a late-night fire that swept through the Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, leaving property worth millions of naira in ruins.
The inferno, which broke out on Thursday night, was confirmed by the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, in a statement issued on Friday, April 11, 2025.
According to Akinyinka, the fire service received a distress call from a resident identified as Mr Young, prompting an immediate response from firefighters who were swiftly deployed to the scene.
He said the firemen acted promptly to curtail the spread of the flames, ensuring that the destruction did not extend beyond the 12 shops already affected.
Akinyinka disclosed that although the fire raged for over three hours, the swift intervention of his team prevented a greater catastrophe, saving property valued at billions of naira from being consumed.
The fire, he added, was traced to a power surge, which sparked the blaze that wreaked havoc on the popular market located in the heart of Ibadan.
While the financial loss incurred by the shop owners has left many devastated, emergency officials have assured the public of continued vigilance to avert future occurrences.
