There was an outbreak of fire yesterday, at the Ondo State Head Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akure.
The fire which gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers, started at about 7.30 pm.
An impeccable source at the INEC office hinted that the fire destroyed over 5,000 smart card readers prepared for the October 10 election.
It was gathered that the fire also destroyed some items in a section of the office.
When our correspondent visited the scene, security operatives had cordoned off the premises.
However, when men of the State Fire Service arrived at the scene shortly after the fire started, they were helpless as their trucks refused to work.
The National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye and the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Rufus Akeju expressed shock at the incident.
They said though the fire is a setback but promised that it will not affect the conduct and date of the governorship election.
