Fire razes house, shops in Akure

Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed in a fire outbreak that occured at Sunday (midnight) at Idiroko area of Oke-Aro in Akure, Ondo State.

Hope Metro gathered that the inferno which almost consumed the building next to Mega Primary School in the area was caused by power surge at midnight when NEPA restored light.

It was the quick intervention of residents and neighbours that made the disaster minimal.

A provision store owner and a fashion designer were not so lucky as all the goods in their shops were consumed.

An eyewitness who spoke with Hope Metro, Mr. Richard Orejesu said the “the horrific incident started yesterday (Sunday) evening around 10pm when the electricity sparked.

He said properties that was burnt, Mr. Orejesu stated that the estimation worth over 7 million naira.

Narrating his ordeal, a resident, Pastor Ayo Fatokun, said that he was inside his room feeling discomfort due to usual heat and came out to confirm the cause of the heat.

He said when he noticed the smoke, he thereafter alerted the neighbours about the incident.

The Hope Metro gathered that there had been blackout in the shop for over 20 years but for effective development and good sales, Miss. Olajumoke who owned one of the shops pioneered the electricity connection.

Olajumoke, who had earlier stocked her provision store expressed displeasure, saying the incident is a serious debt to her.

Another victim, Mrs. Christiana Opedun, a fashioner designer, said that the destructive occurrence is an heartbreak.

They appealed to the Ondo State Government and the good people of the state to intervene in order to ameliorate the sad incident.

  1. This issue is so critical. They have to sort it out with the help of the government. They should also regulate the kind of power the NEPA will be generate for the citizen.
