Introduction

Fish farming is aquaculture to increase production to meet demand. Fish species raised by fish farmers include Salmon, Catfish, Tilapia, Cod and others..

You need to know how to hatch (optional), Raising from fries to fingerlings or mature fish management practices , culture system and feeding.

Capital:

You will need capital to get land for construction of Earthen Ponds or Vats including farm materials like PH Meter, Net including feeds among many others.

Starting:

You can start with the fries and raising them to fingerlings or post fingerlings then sell them.

You can also hatch them yourself, raise and sell at fries, fingerlings or post fingerlings.

It is more expensive to buy, raise and resell while it is very cheap to hatch yourself, raise then sell.

Feeding:

Understand that 50 percent of your investment goes in feeding but you can reduce your cost of feeding by giving them a locally formulated feed. You can buy the feed ingredients from several places then grind and pellet for your fish.

Feeding them with local feed, you must be careful and avoid waste

Watch them feed and stop immediately they stop rushing for the food because the local feed will later sink which will pollute the water and could cause trouble for your fish but Imported feeds will be floating.

Floating at the surface of water, gasping for air. You should change your water first and then watch them for that day.

Sometimes, is a result of low oxygen in the water. Ensure you seek professional assistance frequently.

When you notice some  getting bigger than the others, remove the big ones to another pond to avoid  them eating the smaller ones.

This is called sorting, to sort them and leaving fish of same size in the pond.

Overstocking will not make your fish grow as fast as they should and there will be reduction of oxygen in the culture system to avoid stress in fish which may lead to disease outbreak.

Note that it is important to have a manageable pond like having two to three pounds on a plot of land .
