A 35-year-old fish seller, Blessing, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting her neighbour in a heated altercation.
The incident, which occurred on October 1, 2024, at around 10:30 a.m. in the Oke Eri community, Adeosun, Obaile, reportedly escalated into violence between Blessing and her neighbour, Afolabi Adewale.
Inspector Taiwo Oniyere informed the court that Blessing had unlawfully assaulted Adewale by slapping him and tearing his clothes during the confrontation.
Standing trial on a one-count charge, Blessing pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution argued that the offence violated Sections 252 and 351 of the Criminal Laws of Ondo State, Nigeria, 2006.
The defendant’s counsel, Joseph Arinju, did not contest the prosecutor’s request for an adjournment, but pleaded for bail on liberal terms, citing Blessing’s circumstances.
In his ruling, Magistrate Olusola Olujobi granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.
The court stipulated that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction, present valid identification, and provide two passport photographs each.
The Magistrate also ordered that the residences of the sureties be verified by the police and court officials.
The case was adjourned until November 6, 2024, for further hearing.
