Flood: ODSG begins canals’ dredging

In its bid to prevent flooding disasters in the Akure metropolis, the Ondo State Government is set to begin channelization of all flood-prone areas.

An amphibious excavator has been stationed at Odi-Olowo to commence dredging of canals from the Aladetoyinbo/Odi-Olowo/Dajuma areas of the state capital.

The State  Commissioner for Environment, Oyeniyi Oseni, declared this when he led staff from the ministry to inspect the erosion-prone canals at Odi-Olowo and Adegbola/Ehin-Ala axis.

Addressing the people living around the area, Oseni informed them that his ministry has put every necessary machinery in motion to dredge the canals to prevent flooding disasters during the rainy season.

Oseni, according to a release by the Media Head of the ministry, Festus Adeusi, assured the residents that the Waste Management Authority would continue to carry out the timely evacuation of waste in the Akure metropolis, especially around the erosion-prone canals.

He warned them to desist from the habit of disposing waste in the canal to prevent blockages that may lead to flooding, stating that anybody caught in the act or found to be non-compliant with the provision of a waste disposal bin would be prosecuted.

The commissioner assured the people of the state that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has promised to continue to support the ministry at all times in its bid to provide succor for the people of the state with the dredging of the canals to prevent flooding.

He was accompanied to the area by the Administrative Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olumide Kinga, the Director of Ecology, Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye, and others.
