Succor is on the way of flood victims in Ondo State as the state government has concluded arrangements to distribute relief materials to them.
Equally, in other to avoid a repeat of the ugly incidents,the Government has said it would immediately start the demolition of all structures built on waterways in different parts of the state.
The state Acting Governor, Agboola Ajayi, who made the disclosures after inspecting areas where flood wrecked havoc in Idanre local government area of the state, said the demolition was to prevent a re-occurrence of another flooding which has rendered many residents homeless in the state.
Several houses and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in Alade and Odode Idanre following heavy downpours that occurred in the communities.
Many residents who have been rendered homeless as a result of the flood are now taking shelter in neighbours’ houses.
He said amphibious excavator had been deployed to the affected areas to channelise and remove all structures erected on waterways and ensure free flow of water and forestall future occurrence.
The Acting governor equally assured the flood victims of government support, saying that the state government would soon distribute relief materials to them.
He particularly thanked God that no life was lost in the flood, and advised that people still living in the affected buildings to vacate to prevent further and preventable disasters.
“We thank God no life was lost, small flood that is not much like this had killed, but we thank God such did not happen in Idanre. I was in Ibadan when this happened. We have inspected the houses; I will advise that our people should leave the affected houses to prevent another disaster.
“Some people build houses along the river course, we will ensure that no matter how highly placed the persons are, we will demolish the houses to have a free flow of water,” he said.
The Aladeokun of Alade-Idanre, Oba Olusegun Akinbola said it had not happened before in the town and thanked the government for being proactive to the plights of the people of the town.
Also, the Owa of Idanre, Oba Fredrick Aroloye appealed to the government to help the affected people of the community by providing relief materials.
A member representing Idanre in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Festus Akingbaso, thanked the government on behalf of the people for its readiness to provide succour to the victims.
