Flooding: LG boss warns against dumping refuse in drainage

Chairman Akoko North East Local Government, Ashimi Omojola has warned people of the council area to stop dumping refuse indiscriminately, especially in drainages to avoid risk of flooding in the area.

Omojola made this appeal while addressing stakeholders on the need to take the sanitation of their communities seriously during the environmental sanitation exercise in Ikare Akoko.

According to the council boss, Ikare and Akoko North East at large has been marked a flood prone area and dumping of refuse indiscriminate in drainages will transform into debris which often blocks drainages and water ways which normally hinders free flow of erosion and eventually lead to flood disaster.

According to him, the best way to prevent flood and flooding is to take necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, last Saturday’s environmental sanitation exercise was largely successful in Akoko area of the state.

 At Ikare Akoko, people came out in large number to observe it while the council boss, Omojola Ashimi personally came out to observe and supervise the exercise.

The  people of Loso Community, in Ogbagi Akoko, Akoko North West local government came out in hundreds to make sure the blocked drainage which always lead to flooding and destruction of properties in the area was attended to.

A community leader in Ogbagi, Chief Clement Asoje noted that government alone cannot  to do everything.

Chief Asoje said community leaders in the town are not leaving any stone unturned and as such are always mobilising the people to participate in the exercise.

The Director of Environmental Services in Akoko North West Local Government, Mr Olusanya Ojo warned residents against dumping refuse in unauthorized places.

Olusanya reminded them that keeping their environment clean is for their benefit.

A middle aged driver, Ojo Sunday was convicted and fined the sum of five thousand naira for flouting environmental laws at Oke-Agbe, headquarters of Akoko North West Local Government.
