A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, has ordered the remand of a 41-year-old woman, Abiodun Mosunmola, in prison custody for allegedly beating and assaulting a male police officer.
The police had charged the accused, said to be a food vendor, on two counts of conspiracy and assault occasioning harm.
According to the prosecution, the accused and three others at large committed the offence on July 28, 2019 at about 10.00am at Ayetoro Junction beside Oando filling station, Oba Adesida road, Akure.
Prosecuting Sergeant Suleiman Abdullateef told the court that the accused with and other three at large, allegedly beat and assaulted one Sergeant Olayinka Esan with stick and stone which made him sustained severe injuries on his head and mouth.
The alleged offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 516 and 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State Nigeria 2006.
The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.
The police prosecutor, informed the court about the critical condition of the victim, urged the court to refuse the defendant bail, saying he could flee, as she is not from Ondo State.
Counsel to the accused, Mrs Olubukola Adedire who opposed the remand application made by the prosecutor, pleaded with the court to grant her client bail since the offence was bailable.
In her ruling, Magistrate, Victoria Bob-Manuel, held that the offence committed by the accused is bailable.
She however, said due to the circumstances surrounding it, the accused should be remanded in prison pending the next date of adjournment.
She, therefore, adjourned the case till August 15, 2019 for mention.
