Food vendor remanded for assaulting officer

A  Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, has ordered the remand of    a 41-year-old woman, Abiodun Mosunmola,   in prison custody  for allegedly beating and assaulting a male  police officer.

The police had  charged the  accused, said to be a food vendor, on two counts  of conspiracy and assault occasioning harm.

According to the prosecution, the accused and three others at large committed the offence on July 28, 2019 at about 10.00am at Ayetoro Junction beside Oando filling station, Oba Adesida road, Akure.

Prosecuting  Sergeant Suleiman Abdullateef told the court  that the accused  with  and other three at large,  allegedly beat and  assaulted one Sergeant Olayinka Esan  with stick and stone which made him sustained severe injuries on his head and mouth.

The alleged offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 516 and 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State Nigeria 2006.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

The police prosecutor,  informed  the court about  the critical condition of the victim, urged the court  to refuse the defendant bail, saying he could flee, as she  is not from Ondo State.

Counsel to the  accused, Mrs Olubukola Adedire who  opposed  the  remand application made by the prosecutor, pleaded with  the court to grant  her client  bail since the offence was  bailable.

In her  ruling, Magistrate, Victoria Bob-Manuel, held that the offence committed by the  accused is bailable.

She  however, said  due to the circumstances  surrounding  it,  the accused  should be  remanded in prison pending the next date of adjournment.

 She,  therefore, adjourned  the case till August 15, 2019 for mention.
