At least four persons were reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen attackers in Gwer West Local Government area of Benue State.
The Hope Metro gathered that the incident occurred in the Agagbe area at the early hours of Saturday while residents were asleep.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Sunday, disclosed that the assailants stormed the community around 4:00 a.m., shooting sporadically. The attack reportedly left four people dead on the spot.
Our source further revealed that attacks by suspected Fulani militants in the area have been ongoing for several years, with intermittent killings of innocent residents.
The assaults, it was learnt, have left a trail of destruction, becoming a recurring problem in the state.
When contacted, the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government, Hon. Victor Ormin Torsar, confirmed the incident.
He stated, “I was informed of the attack this morning by my supporters from the affected communities.”
He added that efforts are on to address the insecurity situation, and ensure such incidents are curtailed.
Efforts to obtain clarification from the Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered.
