Fresh controversies trail 2Baba, Annie Idibia’s divorce Jaga

By Oluwadamilola Akinduro

Fresh controversy has trailed the separation of iconic Nigerian musician, Innocent ‘Tuface’ Idibia, and his wife, Annie Macauley-Idibia, as allegations of infidelity, emotional abuse and substance addiction continue to cast a shadow over their 12-year union.

Tuface, popularly known as 2Baba, had on January 26, 2025, announced their split in a now-deleted Instagram post, revealing that they had been living apart for a while and had initiated divorce proceedings.

However, shortly after taking down the post, he went live on Instagram to affirm that the announcement was deliberate and not a result of a hack.

“No one hacked my account. I said what I said. I come in peace,” he declared.

Their separation has since been reinforced by social media actions, with the once-admired celebrity couple unfollowing each other, further fuelling speculations about an irreparable breakdown in their marriage.

Cracks in the union

Tuface and Annie, who walked down the aisle in a grand Dubai wedding in 2013, have had their fair share of controversies. Annie had, in the past, spoken openly about the challenges in their marriage, ranging from multiple miscarriages to the strain of Tuface’s involvement with other women.

Recently, unconfirmed reports have emerged alleging that Annie is battling substance abuse and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

The swirling rumours gained traction after a video of Tuface reaffirming their separation went viral, prompting reactions from fans and entertainment industry figures.

Industry reactions

Popular media personality, Toke Makinwa, was believed to have subtly criticised Tuface for announcing the split at a time when Annie was allegedly at her lowest. Meanwhile, renowned dancer, Kaffy, weighed in on the matter, urging the public to exercise empathy rather than cast judgment.

“I am rooting for both of them because they are victims of their circumstances,” Kaffy stated in an Instagram video.

“Male celebrities are often targeted, and sometimes, we women contribute to their struggles. Did any man plan to have many baby mamas?”

She further advised women to reconsider their expectations in relationships, noting that both Tuface and Annie had experienced toxicity in their marriage.

Reacting to the ongoing saga on his Instagram page, Blackface, in an open letter to the couple on Wednesday, urged the duo to maintain decorum and be civil amid their marital challenges.

While reminding the couple of the importance of their roles in society, Blackface acknowledged that every relationship has its ups and downs.

“My open letter to Innocent Idibia and Annie Macaulay Idibia. I send you good tidings, Mr and Mrs Idibia. I’m reaching out at this time to remind us to show decorum and be civil with whatever proceedings you may be going through.

“As role models, we should always set good examples for this generation to emulate, and for older generations to be proud. Let’s keep it together as every relationship has ups and downs. I pray that God gives both of you the strength to scale through this. My regards to your families and my love to your kids,” he wrote.

In her own view, Veteran broadcaster Kikelomo Atanda-Owo has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the troubled marriage of Nollywood actress Annie Idibia and music legend Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia.

In a thought-provoking commentary, Atanda-Owo dissected the complexities of love, sacrifice, and self-worth, urging women to prioritize self-love over societal expectations.

Taking to Instagram, she reflected on Annie’s unwavering loyalty to 2Baba, despite the turbulent nature of their relationship.

“The foundation of a relationship determines its future,” she noted, emphasising that Annie stood by the singer through his rise to fame and even after he fathered children with other women.

“She stayed, even when he continued seeing his baby mama. Love isn’t a crime, but women must learn to place themselves above men in relationships,” she added.

While expressing empathy for Annie’s resilience, Atanda-Owo stressed the need for women to safeguard their emotional and mental well-being.

What Annie tolerated, accommodated, and endured—most men wouldn’t handle a fraction of it. Imagine another man merely touching their wife’s waist; many marriages would collapse instantly,” she argued.

She also commended 2Baba for his maturity in handling the situation, particularly his decision to avoid public outbursts.

“We don’t know the full picture or what’s going through his mind, but I respect the fact that he hasn’t rushed to social media to spill details. That level of composure is commendable, even though he is the architect of these challenges.”

Condemning the culture of social media trials, Atanda-Owo criticized how online users had turned the couple’s private struggles into a public spectacle.

“Social media instantly turned their pain into entertainment—casting blame, criticizing, and even laying curses. Why don’t we wait to hear from those involved before fueling the frenzy?”

She used the saga as a wake-up call for women, advocating for self-empowerment over societal validation.

“We must teach the next generation that self-love and self-development come first. Marriage is not what validates a woman or a man. Tuface and Annie aren’t the first, and won’t be the last, to go through divorce. Sometimes, separation marks the beginning of healing and growth. What matters most is finding peace and moving forward.”

The news of their separation has sent shockwaves across the entertainment industry, with many fans expressing disbelief. Despite their turbulent past, the couple had previously shown resilience in weathering challenges, leading many to believe their marriage would endure.

Tuface, a pioneer of modern Nigerian music, remains a respected figure who has paved the way for global stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.
