The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has placed Nigeria on the continental map, emerging as the Best Road Safety Agency in Africa at the 3rd edition of the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards.
The prestigious award, held between April 14 and 15 2025 in Eluwini, Kingdom of Eswatini, South Africa, is a glowing recognition of the Corps’ nearly four decades of unwavering commitment to saving lives and promoting safety on Nigerian roads.
A statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Olusegun Ogunbemide, disclosed that the award was presented to the FRSC in acknowledgment of its outstanding contribution to road safety management across the continent.
“You may recall that the Kofi Annan Road Safety Award was instituted by the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Road Safety, in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation, to immortalise the legacy of one of Africa’s illustrious sons, Kofi Annan, who once served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations,” the statement read.
Ogunbemide described the honour as a badge of pride for Nigeria, noting that it also reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for the FRSC and his belief in the Corps’ potential to serve as a model for other African countries.
According to him, the FRSC’s relentless drive to reduce road crashes and promote safer motoring practices has earned international recognition, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in road safety within the sub-region.
“The award speaks volumes. It justifies the giant strides Nigeria has taken in ensuring the safety of road users and her leadership role in Africa’s road safety architecture,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the feat as a testament to the Corps’ passion and consistency in promoting road safety.
He extended gratitude to the motoring public, stakeholders, partners and the Nigerian people, stressing that the milestone was made possible through collective support and collaboration.
“Our winning formula involves deploying innovative strategies, implementing result-driven road safety initiatives, fostering stakeholder partnerships, engaging communities on safe driving practices, and leveraging technology and enforcement protocols,” the Corps Marshal added.
The award was received on behalf of the FRSC and the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Principal Staff Officer to the Corps Marshal, Assistant Corps Marshal Meshach Adigizi Jatau.
