Frustrated man attempts suicide, jumps inside well in Akure

A 42-year-old man, Identified as Awelewa, has reportedly attempted suicide as he jumped inside a deep well at Powerline, Ijoka area in Akure South Local Government of Ondo State
The incident which happened around 3:00p.m on Friday caused pandemonium in the area and raised concerns over factors responsible for such behaviour.
The Hope Metro gathered that Awelewa, a father of four had last week made an attempt to slaughter his wife by inflicting a deep cut on her neck in the midnight, while asleep. But he was stopped by his children and neighbours.
It was gathered that the victim decided to kill his wife for her refusal to lend him more money, because he was yet to pay back the previous money he had borrowed.
The man was reported to have ran away from home for days with the fear that he might be arrested by the Police.
A source said that the man claimed that personal challenges and the fact that his wife is no longer faithful to him, had led him to attempt killing her.
Another source who craved anonymity disclosed that the man who has been jobless for a while had collected a huge money from his wife, his sister-in-law and some co-tenants which he had failed to payback.
Also, an eyewitness, a mechanic, who does not want his name on print, said they saw the man wandering about and some men who are close to him called him and persuaded him to make peace with is wife and come back home.
“When we saw him, we persuaded him to reconcile with his wife and father-in-law. And immediately, we sent for his wife.
” When he heard that his wife and his father-in-law were coming and also heard that his father-in-law had reported his action at the police station, the man moved back with the belief that he wanted to get a chair to sit down. But what we suddenly noticed was that he stood on the well nearby and jumped inside it.
“It took some sympathizers some minutes to rescue him,” he said.
At the scene of the incident, his wife, called ” Iya Nife” narrated her ordeal on how her husband tried to kill her at midnight without any misunderstanding.
She narrated, “He nearly slaughtered me when I refused to give him more money after I asked him to pay his previous debt of almost N200,000 and the one he is owing our neighbours.
“I spent four days in the hospital for treatment,” she said.
He was, thereafter, taken to an undisclosed hospital while his father-in-law insisted that he should be arrested.
The incident was later reported at the Ala Police Station.
