FUTA student, 3 others die in Ondo accidents

No fewer than four persons died yesterday in separate road accidents which occurred in Akure and Ondo town. Eight others escaped death by the whiskers.
It was gàthered that a 200 level Software Engineering student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) , Adeyinka Daniel died in the Akure autocrash while three others were crushed by a petrol laden tanker in Ondo town.
The accident which claimed the life of the student occurred at the early hours of yesterday in Akure, involving five other students of the university.
As a result, FUTA students blocked entrances into the school as well as the Akure-Ilesa highway to protest the death of their colleague.
Commenting on the circumstances that led to the death of the student, the President, National Association of Ondo State Students, (NAOSS) Ayoade Kikiowo told The Hope that reports from eye witnesses had it that negligence on the part of the school management caused the death of the student.
Kikiowo said: “It is important that we take position to avoid future reoccurrence because injustice to one is an injustice to all. As it happened to someone today, it can happen to any of us anytime.”
Reacting to the situation, the institution management, in a statement signed by the Registrar, Richard Arifalo expressed sadness at the incident.
The institution claimed that the school’s health centre promptly attended to the victim and that he was brought in clinically dead.
Others who were seriously injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Also in Ondo, according to a source around Sabo Lipakala, the truck with registration number: GMD 384 XA rammed into the motorcycles before it was halted by the fence of St James Grammar School.
The truck was said to be heading to Ife Garage in Ondo before it lost control and crushed the victims waiting for passengers.
An eyewitness , Deji Alo told The Hope that the crash occurred around 8:40 pm.
The remains of the victims have been deposited in the mortuary by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps while those who were injured were rushed to the University of Medical Science Teaching Hospital.
The source said the truck driver was said to have immediately reported at the police station after the incident happened
Men of the FRSC, Ondo Command at the scene confirmed the crash.
When The Hope visited the UNIMEDTH, Dr Ajibola Bankole of Accident and Emergency section of the TRAUMA Centre described “the accident as a terrible one, explaining that seven patients were brought to the hospital and a lady working with United Bank of Africa, UBA was brought in dead, we couldn’t do anything to rescue her.
“Another one had femoral fracture and haemoperitoneal also died during resuscitation. We were able to resuscitate others.
Victims identified in the accident were: Bola Adekunle, Ayo Igbekele, Odun Adedoyin, Imole Babalola, others could not be reached.
Speaking with journalists, the driver of the petrol tanker, Yekini Rilwan said the accident was caused by brake failure.
