Gender based-violence: Reps to lead march Monday
As part of activities marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the House of Representatives will on Monday, November 25, 2024, lead a historic march against gender-based violence (GBV)
In a statement, House Spokesman Akintunde Rotimi revealed that the march, involving over 1,000 participants, will begin at the National Assembly and end at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, where a petition will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police.
The petition will call for decisive measures to protect vulnerable groups and hold GBV perpetrators accountable.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized the importance of the march, stating, “This is not just a symbolic gesture; it reflects our resolve to combat gender-based violence. Through collective action and legislative reforms, we aim to create a society rooted in safety, justice, and equality.”
As part of the 16 Days of Activism, members of the House will wear orange sashes during plenary sessions to show solidarity.
A strategic meeting with Speakers of State Houses of Assembly will be held on December 9, 2024, to discuss legislative strategies for tackling GBV across the country.
The activities will culminate in the National Citizens’ Summit and GBV Conference on December 10, where discussions will focus on constitutional reforms and gender equality initiatives.
The House reiterated its commitment to addressing the scourge of GBV, which continues to affect families and communities nationwide.
It pledged to drive systemic reforms and foster collaboration to protect human rights and promote equality.
“Together, we can build a safer, more equitable Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
