Gov. Alia commiserates with family of late Prof J.T. Orkar over his sudden demise

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, on Tuesday in Makurdi, the state capital, commiserated with the Orkar family over the death of their patriarch, Prof. Kpamor Joseph Targema Orkar, who passed away at a private hospital in Abuja on Sunday, 5th January 2025.
The Governor described the late Prof. J.T. Orkar as a great community leader, father, and mentor to many, noting that his influence as a politician and public servant extended far beyond his immediate family and professional circle.
Prof. Orkar, an elder brother to Major Gideon Orkar of the 1990 coup d’état fame, was celebrated for his conscious efforts to address national challenges during his time.
The Governor highlighted Prof. Orkar’s exemplary service as a councillor representing the Ugondo/Mbasambo Council Ward of Gwer Local Government in 1978, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Yonov District Constituency of Makurdi Local Government in 1979, and as Commissioner for Works and Transport under Governor Aper Aku’s administration.
He noted that Prof. Orkar’s dedication, knowledge, wisdom, and mentorship inspired generations to strive for excellence.
As the first professor of “Zwa Tiv,” Prof. Orkar will also be remembered for his contributions to Tiv literary heritage, having authored several books in the Tiv language.
Governor Alia prayed for God to console Prof. Orkar’s immediate family, the people of Makurdi Local Government, and the entire Benue State. He also prayed for the late professor’s eternal rest.
