The Forum of Governing Council Members in Nigeria Tertiary Institutions have stated the council’s commitment in empowering tertiary institutions for national transformation.

Interim National Coordinator/Chairman of the forum, Dr. Akin-Thomas Babajide stated this when speaking with The Hope.

The Ondo-born politician explained that the forum is a platform for sharing information, best practices, and fostering collaboration among members of the governing councils of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.”It’s essentially a networking and advocacy group for these council members.

“It serves as a forum for exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices among governing council members.

“It aims to enhance the effectiveness of governing councils in their oversight and management of tertiary institutions. The forum is likely comprised of individuals appointed to the governing councils of various federal and state-owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.”

Dr.Babajide, who is a Member, Governing Council of Modibbo Adama Federal University, Yola Adamawa State, said the Governing Councils members are expected to drive the President Tinubu’s vision within the tertiary education sector, emphasising their empowerment and the broader national impact.

He noted that members are tasked to steer their respective institutions towards multiple sources of funding, saying the government cannot single-handedly meet the financial needs of all the tertiary institutions.

“The government has asked us to explore diverse sources of funding, including partnerships with the private sector and international organisations, alumni, and through endowment and sponsored research.”

He also listed other challenges ahead of the newly inaugurated councils including navigating complex institutional dynamics, ensuring financial sustainability and resource allocation.
