A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Ondo State, Dr Babajide Akinwolere, has emphasised that poverty eradication should not be left to the government alone, urging Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and well-meaning individuals to complement efforts in tackling the menace.
He also called on philanthropists and politicians to contribute towards eliminating poverty by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking in Ondo, during a cash empowerment programme for residents of Ondo East and Ondo West Federal Constituency, Akinwolere stressed that poverty alleviation is a collective responsibility.
He advocated for an integrated approach to human development, including income generation, human capital development, and capacity-building initiatives for the less privileged.
According to him, the Federal Government must also prioritise investment opportunities for the poor and vulnerable in society.
Akinwolere revealed that 200 individuals have been shortlisted for the empowerment scheme, with forms made available to the public free of charge.
“Each batch consists of ten beneficiaries who receive N100,000 each. So far, we have successfully disbursed funds to two batches, and we are committed to reaching our target of 200 beneficiaries,” he stated.
The programme’s coordinator, Olufemi Ademilua, disclosed that 20 people had already benefitted from the initiative, which is designed to break the cycle of poverty affecting many Nigerians.
“The process is seamless and aimed at transforming lives, especially in these difficult times. We commend the donor for this laudable initiative and urge other well-meaning Nigerians and politicians to emulate this gesture,” Ademilua said.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to Weekend Hope expressed their appreciation for the empowerment programme, describing it as timely. Beneficiaries; including Olawanle Fatima, Ajoke, Ogunnusi Babatunde Felix, Dele Akarigbo and Adeyemo Joshua, confirmed they had received the financial support.
