Govt promises more attention for Unity Schools

The five Unity Secondary Schools in Ondo State will soon get the attention of the government, especially on new infrastructure because they are the model schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Femi Agagu gave the assurance during   the 2019 edition of the unity schools competition held in Akure, the state capital.

The competition which was last held ten years ago, was said to promote healthy rivalry among  students and to give them the opportunity to interact and compete academically with one another.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Rev Akin Asaniyan said the competition was put together to reposition the schools with a view to raising the standard which was the dream of the founding fathers.

”This will help to build confidence and the spirit of godliness competition among  students thereby improving their overall academic performance”.

He said the Laurels won by the Ondo state contingents in various national and international academic and co-curricular competitions are affirmation of the present administration’s giant strides in the education sector.

The Commissioner therefore admonished the students to have a healthy strive and put in their best to excel, adding that the competition is not a do or die affair.

During the competition that lasted hours, the representatives of the schools which are the five Unity Secondary School in Akure, Owo, Odeaye, Epinmi, and Ondo  slugged it out in English, Mathematics, Arts, Science and Commercial subjects in the senior category, while in the junior category, the contestants tested their wits in English, Mathematics and General paper.

At the end of the competition, Unity Owo, won the governor’s trophy for clinching the first position, Unity Ode aye won the Commissioner’s trophy as second and Unity Ondo, as third the Permanent Secretary as third in the junior category.

While in the senior category, Unity Schools Akure emerged first, Unity, Epimi Akoko as the second and Unity Ondo as third.

The Commissioner while congratulating the winners revealed plans of the government to address the challenges facing unity secondary schools in the state just as he promised relevant books would be procured and distributed to all schools in the state.
