Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is committed to effectively utilizing the over N16 billion allocated by the World Bank to address malaria, infant and maternal mortality rates in the state.
The governor made this pledge during a meeting with the World Bank Impact Team on Immunization and Malaria on Tuesday in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Aiyedatiwa hinted that the state has developed comprehensive plans to enhance the health sector, including the improvement of existing health facilities and tackling diseases.
“We have identified key areas where immediate intervention is needed and have laid out strategies to maximize the impact of these funds. This fund will significantly boost our efforts in reducing infant and maternal mortality rates and combating malaria”, the Governor said.
Dr. Onoriode Ezire, the team leader for the World Bank Impact Team on Immunization and Malaria, noted that an additional twenty thousand dollars has been budgeted for upgrading and improving health facilities in the state.
“The World Bank is committed to supporting Ondo State in its mission to improve healthcare, we have earmarked these funds specifically to enhance health infrastructure and services”, he stated.
Ezire emphasized the importance of the State’s commitment to enhancing its health system, pointing out that the state has eighteen months to access and implement the four million dollars already available for immunization and malaria eradication, which includes the free distribution of mosquito nets.
“Ondo State must be proactive in utilizing these resources to make a tangible impact on public health,” he stressed.
Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, praised the World Bank team for their partnership in addressing health challenges, and assured that the state government is ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure effective utilization of the funds.
“This partnership is crucial for tackling the health issues our communities face, we are committed to ensuring that these funds are used efficiently across all 203 wards where health facilities are located”, said
The Commissioner further elaborated on the state’s plans saying, “The funds will be directed towards enhancing primary healthcare centers, upgrading medical equipment, and ensuring the consistent supply of essential medicines. Our goal is to create a robust health system that can sustain improvements in health outcomes long-term.”
