Grandma remanded for land fraud

An Ondo Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of an 87-year-old trader, Eunice Akinsanmi, in Ondo female Correctional Centre, over N1,300,000 land fraud.

The court presided over by Magistrate, O. A. Omofolarin, gave the order pending the perfection of the defendant’s bail.

The octogenarian was arraigned by the police on two counts of conspiracy and fraud.

According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the offence on March 1, 2024, at about 10am at No. 37, Temiwolowa Street, Yaba, Ondo.

The charge read,” That you, Eunice Akinsanmi and others at large on March 1, 2024 at about 10 am, at No 37, Temiwoluwa Street, Yaba, Ondo, in the Ondo Magisterial district, conspired to commit felony to wit obtaining money under false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you, Eunice Akinsanmi and others at large on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district fraudulently obtained the sum of N1,300,000, from one Ishola Ojo Akintelure and Mrs Mercy Fadugbagbe and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendant pleaded not-guilty to the charge preferred against her.

The prosecutor, Supol Bernard Olagbayi, told the court that he would be calling four witnesses to testify in the case, he, however, prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him to present the prosecution witnesses and prepare them for trial.

The defence counsel, Mr. Isreal Ikuemonisan, applied for the bail of the defendant in the most liberal terms.

Magistrate, O. A. Omofolarin, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1.5 million with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must be responsible citizens of this country and must be blood-related.

Omofolarin directed that the sureties must attach  two passports of the defendant, and that of the sureties must be attached as well with a valid I.D Card.

However, she ordered that the defendant be taken to female prison pending when her bail would be perfected.

Omofolarin, adjourned the case till May 2, 2024, for trial.
