In its quest to promote environmental sustainability and protection, Green Mind International (GMI) Academy has trained over 500 youths in Ondo State, equipping them with the skills and knowledge required to foster environmental consciousness.
The academy’s Founder and Executive Director, Miss Olamide Olayiwola, disclosed this during the Plastic Project Implementation Event held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Olayiwola highlighted the academy’s commitment to empowering youths, urging them to take proactive steps towards climate action and environmental preservation.
The event, which saw the participation of hundreds of youths, introduced an innovative initiative where participants exchanged plastic waste for foodstuffs. The collected plastics will be recycled into reusable products, contributing to sustainable waste management.
Explaining the Plastic Barter Project, Olayiwola stated that it is a key initiative of the youth-led organisation aimed at addressing plastic waste pollution and food scarcity, driven by economic challenges.
She added that the academy’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on climate action, life on land, quality education, and zero hunger, while providing local solutions to global issues.
Olayiwola noted that the project incentivises responsible waste disposal, reducing plastic pollution, feeding households, and educating communities on sustainable practices.
“This project was born out of a vision to create a culture of recycling and sustainability in every Nigerian community and to also support community members.
“For Ondo State, it reduces the burden of managing plastic waste, improves public health by minimizing pollution, and creates a cleaner and more attractive environment for residents and visitors.
For the environment, it helps combat climate change by diverting plastic from landfills and waterways, encouraging recycling, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” she said.
She called on governments, stakeholders, and international organisations to support the project, stressing its potential to address climate risks and foster sustainable development.
The Deji of Akure, Oba (Dr) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, lauded the initiative, describing it as a vital solution to climate challenges and flooding in Ondo State.
The monarch appealed to governments to extend necessary support to the academy, emphasising that such initiatives are crucial for a better Ondo State and Nigeria.
