The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of a prominent professor in the Department of Philosophy, Jimoh Olanipekun Famakinwa.
A statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, revealed that the professor, during a departmental meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, was observed breathing abnormally by his colleagues, prompting an urgent response.
“He was immediately rushed to the University Health and Medical Centre for medical attention. Upon thorough examination by doctors on duty, he was referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), where he was later pronounced ‘brought in dead’ (B.I.D.),” the statement read.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, alongside other members of the university’s management, paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family, expressing shock over the sudden loss of the respected academic.
Describing the late professor as a brilliant scholar whose contributions impacted many lives, Bamire urged the family to take solace in the legacy he left behind.
“As Christians, we must remember that the Lord gives and takes as He pleases,” the Vice-Chancellor said, praying for strength for the family, the Department of Philosophy, the Faculty of Arts, and the entire university community.
Meanwhile, the remains of the late professor have been deposited at the university’s anatomy department.
